1920年8月，由陳望道翻譯的《宣言》首個完整中譯本正式出版。

　　陳望道（1891年—1977年），是中國著名學者、教育家、翻譯家、語言學家，曾任復旦大學校長及上海大學、安徽大學、廣西大學等高校教授，擔任過《辭?！?總主編，著有《修辭學發(fā)凡》等書，一生從事文化教育和學術(shù)研究。

　　陳望道1915年赴日本留學，受十月革命影響，陳望道在日本開始接觸馬克思主義新思潮，并閱讀了日文版馬克思主義著作。

　　1920年初，陳望道應(yīng)上?！缎瞧谠u論》雜志的約稿，開始翻譯《宣言》，所依據(jù)的日文版和英文版《宣言》分別由《星期評論》編輯戴季陶和《新青年》主編陳獨秀提供。

　　陳望道的翻譯是在環(huán)境險惡和異常艱苦的條件下秘密進行的，為了防止反動當局的突然襲擊，陳望道躲在一間破舊的柴草棚里，點著昏暗的油燈，克服了缺少資料和工具書等重重困難，經(jīng)過百余天的奮斗，終于完成了《宣言》的第一部完整中譯文稿。
